PHOENIX — Enormous Roman numerals — XLIX — lit up the downtown area around First and Jefferson streets before dawn Wednesday, as workers made final preparations to Super Bowl Central.

Verizon Super Bowl Central officially gets underway at 2 p.m. and an opening ceremony at 6:30 p.m. featuring Arizona’s Jordin Sparks and the Budweiser Clydesdales.

Super Bowl Central will be open through Sunday.

“It’s free and family friendly,” Devney Preuss said. Preuss is with the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee.

One activity comes with a price, though: a 30-foot climbing wall that looks like the Grand Canyon is $5.

Impressive as that may be, it still doesnt’ reach the heights of the Super Bowl sign. The Roman numerals signifying which NFL title game is being played (49) are almost 40 feet high and 116 feet wide.

Hours:

• Wednesday through Friday, 2 p.m.-10 p.m.

• Saturday, 10 a.m.-10 p.m.

• Sunday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

A fireworks show will take place every evening at 10 p.m.
