Cusseaux family hopes Justice Department will intervene

PHOENIX — The family of the mentally unstable woman who was shot and killed by police on August 14 will be contacting the Department of Justice, in hopes the agency will intervene.
The announcement came days after the Phoenix Chief of Police announced the Arizona Department of Public Safety would be taking over the investigation into the death of 50-year-old Michelle Cusseaux and representatives from police unions are troubled.
“You’d have to be dead to believe politics doesn’t play into this,” said Joe Clure, president of the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association (PLEA). “It shows a lack of confidence and faith in our homicide unit.”
Michelle Cusseaux’s family members believe Phoenix Police and DPS protect each other, so a family spokesperson said they were prompted to contact the Justice Department.
