PHOENIX -- A woman who was hospitalized with critical injuries after being shot by a Phoenix police officer following an altercation at a Maryvale apartment complex has died.
Police say mental health workers were trying to serve a mental-health order on 50-year-old Michelle Cusseaux about 2:15 p.m. Thursday.
They say she threatened the workers and police were called to the scene at the Graybriar Condominiums.
One male and two female officers arrived on the scene. They said the woman was holding a then-unspecified weapon in a threatening manner. When a sergeant arrived on the scene, Cusseaux opened the front door and came at the officers with a claw hammer raised over her head. She was shot by the sergeant, a 19-year veteran on the force.
The officers administered CPR before she was transported to a hospital.
The police sergeant has been placed on administrative leave, pending both a criminal and internal investigation.
Police say no officers were injured.
