The manhunt for two inmates who escaped from a New York prison has reached new heights after bloodhounds detected a strong scent Thursday, according to ABC News.

An official on the search confirmed that canines picked up a strong scent related to escaped inmates David Sweat and Richard Matt, suggesting they might be in the area.

In response, New York State Police shut down an 8-mile stretch of a nearby freeway, increased police presence in the area and closed a nearby school district.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said authorities are following every lead that comes across.

“We’re following every tip, that’s all I can say,” he said in an interview with ABC News. “Look — They could either be 4 miles from the prison or they could be in Mexico, you just don’t know.”

Convicted murderers Sweat, 34, and Matt, 48, were reported missing from the Clinton Correctional Facility on Saturday and have not been seen since. Investigators believe the two might have escaped to Vermont.
