‘Shazam!’

Let’s see…Should we devote this time to potential violence at the Winter Olympics, untrustworthy politicians or insensitivity to our fellow human beings?
Nah! Everybody’s doing that.
Let’s discuss the value of calling on those who have solutions for all of those things and they never fail: Superheroes.
This weekend, the Amazing Arizona Comic Con returns to the Phoenix Convention Center and even though the Avengers may be busy solving world problems in some other part of the planet, isn’t it fun to fantasize once again that there’s someone who really can do something to preserve “Truth, justice and the American Way”?
When I was a kid, I only collected one thing: Comic books. I collected Superman, Batman, Sub-Mariner — and my all-time favorite — Captain Marvel. I mean, this comic was about another kid — boy broadcaster Billy Batson — who learned that in order to fight crime and evildoers, all he had to do was shout “Shazam!” and he would turn into Phoenix Suns announcer Al McCoy! No, I mean, Captain Marvel!
Now, the people who say they’re our heroes shout, “I don’t know anything about it!” and they turn into…disappointments.
I’m Pat McMahon.
