Greek geeks

OK! It’s Jan. 22, 2014!
We’re well into the 21st century, so will somebody explain to me the importance of fraternities and sororities? I’m asking today because of the latest embarrassing Greek peek at social life on the ASU campus. You must have heard by now that these future young leaders have done it again.
Tau Kappa Epsilon, the fraternity that had already been put on social probation for an off-campus brawl with another fraternity, decided to recognize Martin Luther King Day with a party in which the invitees were instructed to “dress like black people” and drink from hollowed-out watermelon cups.
Mom and dad, if your son is considering pledging next school year, the name of the fraternity is Tau Kappa Epsilon — TKE, for “tacky.” But why would your son or daughter pledge for memberships? Are they so socially limited they need “group security”? Is it the attraction of secret rituals and handshakes? I had a Captain Midnight decoder ring for a while, but I grew up.
The benefits of belonging to a group whose name, when translated means “dry heaves,” well…
It’s Greek to me.
I’m Pat McMahon.
