On Thursday, a rally and luncheon is planned on the grounds of the state Capitol, designed to attract business to Arizona.

Not just any business, but an industry that is glamorous, environmentally-friendly and has a history of leaving millions of dollars behind when it leaves a state. I’m talking about the film industry — the business that is constantly looking for new places as backgrounds for its stories and commercials.

Just yesterday, a report came out of Los Angeles that producers of feature films and television programs are increasingly seeking locations outside of California. Many of you may have thought, because of the past, that Arizona was still a major player in the movie business. In fact, the state film office no longer exists.

How is that possible for a state that borders California, has the best climate for shooting films, unlimited talent and is a right-to-work state — potentially saving a fortune for a production company?

Currently 45 states and Puerto Rico offer incentives to filmmakers; Arizona is among the least generous.

Vancouver, British Columbia Is the new Hollywood, while Arizona is just sleeping through the main feature.

I’m Pat McMahon.
