It’s Monday night in America.
There’s a great football matchup on television between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cincinnati Bengals. HBO has a couple of Oscar-winning movies showing. But you know what I’m going to be watching? The season premiere of “Dancing With the Stars.” And let me join you in asking, “Why?”
I ask myself that every year. This season it’s an even bigger curiosity. Among the entertainment giants who will be shaking their booties are singer Christina Milian, Amber Riley from “Glee,” and Disney’s Corbin Bleu. Corbin Bleu? That’s a cooking school, not a dancer. There also added glamor this year with New Jersey’s other disaster, Snooki. And what’s the story with Valerie Harper battling brain cancer and Jack Osbourne, who has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
Can’t they just be inspiring without being asked to dance for us? Doesn’t that seem a trifle exploitative?
We’ve seen Elizabeth Berkley’s talents in both “Saved by the Bell” and the adults-only “Showgirls.” I can’t make this up. One of the dancing stars is Bill Nye the Science Guy. Just create your own punch line on that one.
The judges will all be there: the cranky, old Brit, the beautiful, but aging dancer and the melodramatic, stereotypical choreographer. Ridiculous!
And I’ll watch every week. But why?
