Arpaio running for 6th term

May 31, 2012, 7:53 AM | Updated: Jun 4, 2012, 10:34 pm

PHOENIX — Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has filed his nomination
petition signatures to run for a sixth term.

Arpaio’s office announced Wednesday that he submitted more than 15,000
signatures from Republican and Independent voters throughout the county.

That figure is more than four times the required number of signatures to
qualify for the ballot.

The self-proclaimed toughest sheriff in America has been a national political fixture.

Arpaio has built his reputation on jailing inmates in tents and dressing them
in pink underwear. He also sells himself to voters as being unceasingly tough on crime. His enforcement of immigration laws has drawn protests, criticism and a civil rights lawsuit from the U.S. Department of Justice.

We want to hear from you.
