PHOENIX – With fewer people hitting the roads for Memorial Day this year amid the coronavirus pandemic, the number of DUI arrests in Arizona were down compared to 2019’s numbers.

According to the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, there were 405 people arrested on suspicion of DUI from Friday to Monday of the holiday weekend.

Of those arrested, 58 were for extreme DUI, which are for those stopped with a blood alcohol content of 0.15 or more.

The average known BAC of those arrested was .153. The legal BAC in Arizona is 0.08.

The report also noted that 167 people were arrested for driving under the influence of drugs, the fourth year in a row that figure increased.

The holiday was the first long weekend for Arizonans after the state’s stay-at-home order expired May 15.

Law enforcement conducted a total of 9,395 total traffic stops, which is nearly half of 2019’s number.

During the 2019 Memorial Day weekend, 503 people were arrested on suspicion of DUI with 18,364 total traffic stops conducted.

We want to hear from you.
