PHOENIX — A man accused of assaulting a Mesa bus driver has been arrested, police said.

Robert Nataniel White surrendered to police after his family saw a video of the incident and encouraged him to “do the right thing.”

According to a Mesa Police Department report, on the morning of Sept. 8, White allegedly attacked a bus driver near the Sycamore light rail station on Main Street in Mesa. The assault left the driver hospitalized with head injuries.

Bus camera footage allegedly shows White punching the bus driver more than 20 times in the face and the head while screaming obscenities.

Police say White had difficulty retrieving his bicycle from the bus’s rack due to flooded streets on the morning of the incident. After the bus driver informed White that he was unable to move the bus to help dismount the bike, White grew upset and began his attack. The bus driver remained in his seat with his seat belt on for the entirety of the assault.
