Real estate blog: Arizona has fourth-most miserable Thanksgivings

Nov 21, 2014, 6:24 PM | Updated: 6:24 pm

Although Thanksgiving is generally a time to chow down on a plethora of food and catch up with relatives, there are many things that can go very, very awry during the celebration.

With that in mind, the real estate blog Estately developed an index of each state’s amount of misery when it comes to the late-November holiday.

Estately Blog used six criteria to see which states have the most miserable Thanksgivings.

The blog used Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data to look at 1) the likelihood of a family food-poisoning episode, 2) likelihood of relatives getting drunk and making a scene and 3) dietary restrictions impacting meal quality.

Other criteria were the likelihood of political arguments (using 2012 presidential election results), likelihood of the favorite NFL team losing on Thanksgiving (using NFL and Facebook data) and the likelihood of guests or cooks abandoning the meal to take advantage of Black Friday sales (Facebook user data).

After crunching all of that data, Estately placed Arizona among the 10 most miserable states for Thanksgiving in the nation. More specifically, the Grand Canyon State was the fourth worst on the misery index, only beating out Ohio (most miserable), Iowa (second) and Pennsylvania (third).

Here’s what the blog had to say about Arizona:

There are only a few things you can count on during an Arizona Thanksgiving — the Arizona Cardinals losing and someone struggling to convince the others that meat-free side dishes and sugar-free desserts taste delicious.

The state scored especially low in the categories of “NFL team(s)’ losing percentage on Thanksgiving” and “dietary restrictions”; it rated the worst and second worst, respectively, in those two areas.

Granted, the Cardinals are currently 9-1 this year and haven’t gotten too many Thanksgiving Day opportunities over the years, but the team has not been successful in the few chances it’s had.

If you’re looking to get away to the least miserable state during the November holiday, your destination would be Hawaii, according to the index.

We want to hear from you.
