One dead in Seattle Pacific University shooting

Jun 6, 2014, 12:10 AM | Updated: 2:28 am

PHOENIX — One person was killed Thursday and three more were injured in a shooting at Seattle Pacific University, the Associated Press reported.

At least four people were injured in the shooting, including the person who was killed.

The Seattle Times reported as many as seven people may have been injured. However, police said there was conflicting information.

A hospital official told KIRO-TV a male victim had passed away.

The slain victim’s name was not immediately available.\, but he was 19 years old, according to a KIRO reporter.

The female victim with life-threatening injuries was in surgery. The other two victims were in “satisfactory condition,” the official told KIRO.

West Precinct Capt. Chris Fowler said the suspect, who has not been identified, used a shotgun and was subdued by a student monitor and others while reloading.

Briana Clarke, a witness who was in a physics lab at the time at the shooting, told KOMO-TV she saw a body on the floor as she was escorted out by police. She was not sure if the person was a victim or the shooter nor if the person was alive.

Police tweeted the shooting took place at Otto Miller Hall, the school’s science and engineering building. A campus-wide lockdown was lifted about 5:15 p.m.

No gunmen were actively being sought, though multiple outlets reported there were two shooters. KIRO-TV reported the second gunman was the student monitor who fired pepper spray at the suspect.

Nearby Seattle Country Day School was placed on lockdown, KIRO-TV reported. That was lifted about 5:15 p.m.

The Seattle Storm, a professional women’s basketball team, was also on campus at the time of the shooting.

Seattle Pacific University is located in Fremont, Wash., a suburb of Seattle. Thursday’s remaining classes were canceled.

About 4,270 students attend the private Christian university, which was founded in 1891 by the Free Methodist Church of North America. Its 40-acre campus is in a residential neighborhood about 10 minutes from downtown Seattle.

A woman who answered the phone at the school’s security office quickly disconnected, saying no one could talk.

The incident follows a spate of recent shootings on or near college campuses.

Last month, according to police, Elliot Rodger killed six people and injured seven before turning his gun on himself in a rampage in Isla Vista, California, near two universities.

Seven people were killed and three injured when a 43-year-old former student opened fire at a tiny Christian school, Oikos University, in Oakland, California, in 2012. A gunman killed five people and injured 18 when he opened fire in a Northern Illinois University lecture hall in 2008.

In 2007, 32 people were fatally shot in a dorm and classroom at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia before the gunman, Seung-Hui Cho, killed himself.
