Egyptian Islamic preacher to testify at NY trial

Feb 28, 2014, 12:01 AM

NEW YORK (AP) – An Egyptian Islamic preacher awaiting trial in New York after his extradition from Great Britain says he will testify at his April trial.

A judge included a letter from the suspect, Mustafa Kamel Mustafa (muh-STAH’-fuh kah-MEHL’ muh-STAH’-fuh), in a court filing Thursday.

Mustafa faces charges he conspired to support al-Qaida. The government says he conspired with Seattle men in 1999 to set up a terrorist training camp in Bly, Ore., and helped abduct two American tourists and 14 others in Yemen in 1998.

Mustafa says in a letter to Judge Katherine Forrest dated Feb. 21 that he will testify. He says he plans to discuss all the people, organizations and places in his indictment.

He has pleaded not guilty. His lawyer declined to comment.
