The Arizona Department of Public Safety and Phoenix Police teamed up to make a large-scale street racing bust, a spokesperson for DPS said Monday.

The bust occurred Sunday night when troopers and police officers saw groups of street racers.

“It’s believed that these street racers may have been connected to a Youtube video going around of racers doing donuts and driving recklessly,” said DPS spokesperson Quentin Mehr. “So as troopers and Phoenix PD began observing reckless driving, they took action.”

Mehr said that by the end of the evening, the DPS troopers and police officers had made 65 traffic stops, resulting in 23 arrests and 114 traffic citations.

“Those that were arrested are facing charges of criminal speed, racing (and) reckless driving,” Mehr added.

Mehr said there were believed to be more than 250 racers gathering around the Phoenix area.

“These people are driving recklessly, speeding — this kind of action raises the possibility of serious collision,” Mehr warned. “If you can avoid it, get away from it. But also, if you see something, say something. Call 9-1-1. … By doing so, you may be averting the possibility of somebody getting seriously injured or killed in a wreck with this kind of reckless driving.”

We want to hear from you.
