Sen. John McCain meets with troops in Middle East for holiday, pushes for reassessment of US withdrawal

PHOENIX — It probably wouldn’t be a holiday for U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona)without a visit to troops overseas.
The Senate Armed Services chairman spent the Fourth of July in Afghanistan meeting with soldiers and Afghan officials.
McCain has made previous visits with troops in Afghanistan on American’s Independence Day and also Christmas Day.

During the stop, McCain said the U.S. needs to reassess withdrawal plans because of “the rise of ISIS and other terror groups change the threat environment.”
American troops were to be reduced to 9,800 by the end of this year. Troops were to withdraw completely from Afghanistan by the end of 2016.
