Tonto National Forest goes into restrictions, first in Arizona

PHOENIX — Fire restrictions will be rolled out in Arizona’s Tonto National Forest on Friday, the National Forest Service said.
The restrictions were prompted by triple-digit heat, single-digit humidity and high winds. The forest is the first in Arizona to see fire restrictions this year.
Campers are permitted a charcoal fire in campgrounds with a metal fire ring or pedestal fire grill provided by the Forest Service.
“If you’re out camping in an area without those, you will need to use a gas stove or do without a fire,” spokeswoman Carrie Templin said.
Target shooting is included in the restrictions.
“We ask for patience,” Templin said. “As soon as the monsoon arrives with rainfall and higher humidity we’ll be able to lift the restrictions.”
People caught breaking the rules will be fined up to $500.
