Fun things to do with the family in Arizona on Easter Sunday

Apr 5, 2015, 12:00 PM | Updated: 12:01 pm

Observances of Holy Week and Lent are coming to a close, and other than Easter Sunday services offered throughout the Valley, many local attractions will be hosting events geared toward the whole family.

If you’re looking for something to do on the holiday, here are a few events that are sure to pack some fun for the family:

Movies, movies, movies

The seventh installment of the “Fast and Furious” series hit theaters on Friday, and it’s certain to be a box-office hit. KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Bruce St. James says the film is a worthwhile endeavor. It’s rated PG-13 for sequences of violence, action and mayhem, suggestive content and brief strong language.

If that doesn’t get your heart racing, DreamWorks’ “Home” and Disney’s “Cinderella” — both of which are rated PG — are still in theaters. Or if you have teens, “Insurgent” (PG-13) might be up your family’s alley.

Easter egg hunts

If you missed out on one of the various Easter egg hunts throughout the Valley on Saturday, there are still a handful of such events open to the public on Easter Sunday. Some start as early as 9:30 a.m., so don’t plan on sleeping in.

Below is a sampling of events involving Easter egg hunts on Sunday:

Easter Egg Hunt at Wildlife World Zoo in Litchfield Park
Easter Egg Hunt at Enchanted Island Amusement Park in Phoenix
• Easter Egg Hunt at Scottsdale United Methodist Church
Easter Egg-Stravaganza at Rawhide in Chandler
• Easter Party at Christ’s Community Church in Glendale
Easter Eggstravaganza at Coolwater Christian Church in Chandler

‘Peter Rabbit’ puppet show

Easter means bunnies, and what better story for your young children to learn on the holiday than “Peter Rabbit”? The Great Arizona Puppet Theater will be performing a version of the classic Beatrix Potter story on Sunday afternoon in Phoenix. The story will be told entirely to music, and laughs, suspense and fun will be had.

Yuma County Fair

Head out west for the final day of the 63rd annual Yuma County Fair. Musical acts, fried foods, amusement rides, pony rides and a petting zoo highlight the activities. Also, an educational exhibit give you the chance to learn about reptiles, birds, mammals and invertebrates from around the world.

Sunday A’Fair in Scottsdale

Hop on over to Scottsdale Civic Center Park to throw down a blanket and watch musical acts such as Tramps and Thieves and Kenny Love and the Rockerfellas. An arts and crafts market will be on site, and food, beer and wine will be available. The nearby Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art also offers free admission to those attending park festivities.

‘Gridiron Glory’

Easter Sunday might be your best time to see the “Gridiron Glory” exhibition at the Arizona Science Center in Phoenix before it leaves town. The traveling exhibition was produced by the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, and it will be in Phoenix through May 3. “Gridiron Glory: The Best of the Pro Football Hall of Fame” shows how the game evolved over the years, and it includes more than 200 artifacts and a look at the science behind the popular sport.

Hiking

The weather certainly promises to be warm enough to hit the hiking trails with your family this weekend. National Geographic recently named Phoenix one of the best hiking cities in the country, as there is no shortage of mountains to scale or challenging terrain to traverse. Check out the top five trails in metro Phoenix, as ranked by AllTrails.com.

We want to hear from you.
