PHOENIX — Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey said he understands and supports President-elect Donald Trump’s commitment to keeping businesses in America, but thinks it is the states’ job to deal with business.

In a one-on-one interview with KTAR News, Ducey said he believes that the federal government should stay out of business affairs and let state officials work on keeping jobs and attracting companies.

“I really think the federal government should work on foreign policy, defense of the nation and let the states compete for the best place in which to do business,” Ducey said.

As governor, Ducey said his role is to “demonstrate [how Arizona] can be a better place to do business” than other countries, and even states, like California.

As president, Trump’s role should be to analyze why businesses would want to leave the country, “whether it’s federal tax policy or federal regulation.”

Ducey went on to explain that he thinks one of the ways to attract new business is by incentives.

“I think at the state level, incentives are OK,” he said. “As long as we’re talking about things that are broad based. … Things that don’t provide special favors for some.

“[Incentives] are only when you are hiring people in Arizona, providing jobs in Arizona, [and] making investments in Arizona. That protects the taxpayer, and it also improves our economy.”
