PHOENIX — Thanksgiving dinner isn’t only for people, as the Phoenix Zoo treated some of its monkeys to a special meal Wednesday.

Fourteen squirrel monkeys were treated to a Thanksgiving meal made specifically for them by zoo staff.

“We made their Thanksgiving spread mostly out of their regular diet,” said Amy Dietz, senior primate keeper at the zoo. “We did add some things. We made some pumpkin tarts for all of them.”

The meal was complete with tables, chairs, plates, place cards and even a “kiddie” table.

“Today we got a turkey made out of callitrichid gel, which is sort of a pre-made nutritionally complete diet for them,” Dietz said. “They have lots of fruits and veggies, they have some apple juice that they’re drinking today, so (there are) lots of treats.”

Dietz said it was the first time the zoo has ever offered a Thanksgiving meal for its animal residents.
