Viewing, services for suburban Phoenix officer set for weekend

Several streets in an East Valley city will be shut down over the weekend for funeral-related events for a fallen Chandler police officer.

A public viewing for Officer David Payne, 37, will be neld Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Valley of the Sun Mortuary near McQueen and Chandler Heights roads.

Payne’s funeral will be Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at the Chandler Center for the Arts. He will then be laid to rest at Valley of the Sun Cemetery, which is near the mortuary at McQueen and Chandler Heights.

After the funeral, the procession will head east on Chandler Boulevard to McQueen road, south on McQueen to Chandler Heights road, then west to the cemetery.

Payne was on duty last Friday when he was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver while sitting on his motorcycle near Dobson Road and Chandler Boulevard.

Brian Yazzie, 31, of Tempe was arrested about a half-mile away. He was charged with manslaughter, endangerment, and hit-and-run.
