Poker run to benefit warrior fund on Saturday

Sep 26, 2014, 7:55 AM | Updated: 7:55 am

A local charity is hoping you’ll help it out by playing poker on Saturday morning.

It’s called the Warrior Fund. Richard Cox and his wife started the charity to help those in need.

“The Warrior Fund’s mission is to provide educational and housing opportunities to veterans and their families,” said Cox.

They will be raising money on Saturday by playing a “rolling” game of poker. It starts with registration at 8 a.m. at Lucy’s Sage and Sand bar, located at Glendale Avenue and Litchfield Road — near the main gate at Luke Air Force Base.

Participants will roll away from that bar at 9:30 a.m. They will stop and pick up poker cards at three places along the way.

“Each rider who pays a registration entry fee will get a card at each stop,” Cox said. They will also get a slip on which they can write down what card they received. They will then take that slip back to Lucy’s at the end of the ride.

“We’ll tally up everyone’s hand,” said Cox. “Part of the pot will go to the high hand and part of the pot goes to the low hand.”

The rest of the pot goes to the Warrior Fund.

There will also be Arizona Coyotes hockey tickets and other items up for bid at an auction that will be part of the event.

Many of those riding will be on motorcycles, but other vehicles will be spotted in the rolling poker game, too.

“We’ve actually opened it to two, three, and four wheels,” said Cox. “We call it bikes, trikes and rods.”

Cox believes that anywhere between 50 and 75 riders will take part.
