Mesa City Council to vote on a $6.6 million aquatic center

Jul 1, 2014, 5:00 AM | Updated: 5:00 am

The Mesa City Council votes Tuesday on a $6.6 million aquatic center.

“It’s going to feature a lazy river, a lagoon, zero-depth entry, play features; the main pool is going to be eight lanes with a diving well,” said Rene Powell with the City of Mesa. “There will be a new building built for restrooms, lockers, offices and a classroom.”

Originally, just the old city pool at Taylor Junior High was getting a revamp, but Powell says residents instead wanted a new Mesa aquatic center to be built at Mesa High School.

“It’s open to the public for any of the neighborhoods,” she said. “In that neighborhood, we don’t have a lot of pools in the area so this will serve the entire area.”

The project should be complete by Memorial Day of 2015, she said.

“I think there’s a good chance that it’s going to pass, and we’re looking forward starting construction in within the next three weeks,” she said.

We want to hear from you.
