PHOENIX — The family of slain Phoenix Police Detective John Hobbs is grateful for the show of support from the public and released a statement Thursday through the police department.

Detective John Hobbs was gunned down in the line of duty Monday while serving a felony warrant in northwest Phoenix. The 21-year veteran left behind a wife and three children.

“To the Phoenix community, Thank you for the outpouring of support you have shown our family. John was so proud and honored to live here and wear the Phoenix uniform. Please keep our children in your prayers as they struggle forward without their hero here on earth. Being a dad was John’s proudest title and a responsibility he never took lightly. We miss him greatly”. – Mrs. Hobbs.

Sgt. Steve Martos tweeted out the statement on behalf of the family.

Another officer, AJ Casados, 37, was also shot and critically wounded. He was released from the hospital Wednesday morning and is expected to make a full recovery.

A benefit cookout is being held Thursday for both families at the Garage Grill, located at 11th Avenue and Adams Street in Phoenix. The event is a double shift, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 4-8 p.m.

Hobbs’ funeral has been scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at Christ’s Church of the Valley in Peoria.

A memorial account has been established to help Hobbs’ family. Donations can be made at any National Bank of Arizona location by mentioning Hobbs’ name.

We want to hear from you.
