Cookout to benefit slain, wounded Phoenix police officers

Mar 5, 2014, 5:00 AM | Updated: 5:00 am

PHOENIX — A charity cookout will be held Thursday benefiting the families of two Phoenix police officers, one of which was killed, in a shootout.

“We are so fortunate to have tremendous community support which we definitely do not take for granted,” said Phoenix Law Enforcement President Joe Clure. “However, it’s sad that it takes a tragedy like this to bring that cause people to come together.”

Officer John Hobbs, a 21-year veteran of the Phoenix Police Department, was killed in the line of duty, while another unidentified officer was critically injured and remains hospitalized. Both officers were attempting to arrest a wanted felon, William Thornton, who was also shot and killed during a gun battle near 43rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road in Phoenix.

The benefit cookout is being held Thursday at the Garage Grill located at 1102 W. Adams St. in Phoenix. For more details, click here.
