President Obama talks about Arizona woman during State of the Union speech

Arizona was well represented as guests of the first lady during President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address and one of them was mentioned as an example for the president.
Amanda Shelley, a physician assistant from Gilbert, was brought up when Obama was in the midst of discussing the controversial Affordable Care Act.
Shelley was unable to get insurance before Jan. 1 due to a pre-existing condition. After the beginning of the year she began having pain in her abdomen. Pain she had felt in the past but had ignored.
On Jan. 3 the pain was too much and she went to the emergency room, where she would have emergency abdominal surgery.
A surgery that wouldn’t have been covered before the Affordable Care Act.
