Gov. Jan Brewer calls for stable tuition rates, education reforms

PHOENIX — In the interest of helping students receive higher education, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer said she is pushing for a four-year guaranteed tuition price and education reforms.
“Arizona students need stability and affordability in their college education,” she said during Monday’s State of the State address.
Brewer said sudden hikes in tuition prices can be off-putting to students who are not certain they can afford post-secondary schooling.
Brewer estimated that, by 2018, three out of every five jobs in Arizona would require schooling or training after high school. She said that further emphasized the need for tuition stability.
“Students expect it and tax-paying Arizona parents deserve it.”
In addition to stabilizing tuition, Brewer said she plans to introduce a new education funding system called Student Success Funding that would shift funds to schools that are performing well.
“Our students must be better prepared for the challenging and competitive world they will soon enter,” she said. “That means we stop funding the status quo and instead reward innovation and measure outcomes and fund the results we want.”
Brewer called the plan “ambitious” and “historic.”
