Judge denies Arias motion to fire defense attorney

PHOENIX (AP) – A judge in Phoenix has denied Jodi Arias’ request to fire her lead attorney.
Judge Sherry Stephens of Maricopa County Superior Court issued a brief order saying she explained her reasons for the denial during a closed-door hearing Friday.
Arias had said in a 12-page handwritten document that she no longer trusts attorney Kirk Nurmi and that he hadn’t seen her since May 23. That’s when jurors reached an impasse on whether Arias should be sentenced to life in prison or death for the 2008 killing of boyfriend Travis Alexander.
Stephens previously denied a request by Arias to fire Nurmi in June.
