Experts caution to watch for baby rattlesnakes

Aug 9, 2013, 5:00 AM | Updated: 6:17 am

Experts on venomous creatures warn you to watch out for baby rattlesnakes during summer.

“This time of year, just the number of snakes increases because of all the births, in turn, we increase the risk or odds of coming across one of these snakes,” said Keith Boesen, PharmD, Director of the Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center.

According to the poison center, the snakes are typically born in July and August. They are approximately six to 12 inches long and not equipped with a rattler, instead they have a “button.”

Unlike adult snakes, baby rattlers don’t make the typical rattle sound to alert of their presence. Further, these young reptiles have enough venom to be considered hazardous.

The center cautions those who feel a strange pinch or bite while outside to seek medical attention right away by calling 1-800-222-1222.

We want to hear from you.
