Mayo Clinic using smartphones to treat stroke patients

Smartphones and tablets are helping doctors at the Mayor Clinic Hospital in Phoenix save lives across Arizona.

After conducting research and studies, neurologist Dr. Bart Demaerschalk determined doctors can assess stroke patients accurately using smartphones. Thanks to the iPhone FaceTime video conferencing app, a neurologist can be connected to a patient in rural and remote areas where no experts are available.

“It means an earlier diagnosis, earlier treatment and often providing life-saving or disability preventing treatments,” said Demaerschalk.

In the Valley and across the state, Mayo also uses a smartphone and tablet application that allows them to review brain scans of stroke patients.
