Poll: Commuter texting and driving a growing concern

Mar 28, 2013, 12:17 PM

A recent surveyed showed that virtually half of commuters text and drive.

According to a release, the AT&T-sponsored survey said that 49 percent of commuters are texting and driving compared 43 percent of teens. Ninety-eight percent of commuters added that they text or email while driving despite being fully aware of the dangers.

During April’s National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, AT&T’s “It Can Wait” movement has asked businesses and their employees to pledge personal commitments to never text and drive. Over 165 organizations and more than 1.3 million people have joined via in-person events, Facebook, Twitter or text-to-pledge.

“Through the It Can Wait movement, AT&T is collaborating with employers, nonprofits, law enforcement, educators, legislators, professional associations and government agencies nationwide,” said AT&T Senior Executive Vice President and Global Marketing Officer Cathy Coughlin. “I’m confident, together we can save lives by encouraging millions more to make the personal commitment never to text and drive.”
