Report: Chase Bank website crashes after cyberattack

Mar 12, 2013, 7:26 PM | Updated: 7:27 pm

A reported cyberattack knocked the Chase Bank website offline Tuesday.

According to NBC News, the denial-of-service attack happened from about 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. ET.

Chase confirmed that the outage was due to a denial-of-service attack, in which attackers bombard websites with an overwhelming amount of traffic, overloading their servers and causing sluggish performance or a complete loss of service.

The group who claimed to have committed the attack, al-Qassam Cyber Fighters, said it was going to continue attacking banks over a YouTube video that depicts the Muslim prophet Muhammad in a negative light. The same video also was rumored to cause several uprisings in the Middle East.

Chase’s apps were not affected.

Chase has 300 banking centers, 340 locations and more than 900 ATMs in Arizona.
