They’re small but dangerous: space heaters pose a big fire hazard during the holidays.
Michael Young with the Glendale Fire Department said house fires are always a concern during winter months.
“Half of all home fires in the United States with home heating equipment occur in December, January, and February,” he said.
Young added that people should always keep their space heater away from kids and pets and place it on a flat non-combustible surface, like ceramic tile.
“You want to keep it at least three feet away from anything combustible like furniture, bedding or clothing,” he said,
Should someone need to leave the room or plan to sleep, they should turn the space heater off and follow manufacturer guidelines.
