Virtual school aiding families worldwide

Classroom learning is getting a helping hand from a virtual academy.
The Khan Academy offers free 10-minute videos online hosted by experts for students and teachers alike. Topics are varied, from math to art history.
Charlotte Koeniger, manager of external communications for Khan, joined 92.3 KTAR’s Bruce St. James show Friday to talk about the program.
Founded by Salman Khan, who holds degrees from MIT in mathematics, electrical engineering and computer science, the program is garnering praise and attention. It was featured on the newsmagazine “60 Minutes” this past spring.
“The idea is a free world-class education for anyone, anywhere,” said Charlotte Koeniger, manager of external relations at Khan Academy.
Koeniger estimated the academy has delivered a million lessons in 216 countries.
Khan is one of many instructors behind the videos.
“We’re looking for teachers who are going to make this accessible so an 8-year-old can understand the video and a 28-year-old will also be challenged,” Koeniger said.
