New Arizona testing standards will improve the state

Sep 26, 2012, 5:53 PM | Updated: 5:53 pm

On all the metrics that we’ve seen, Arizona is struggling when it comes to education.

“The biggest issue that I’ve dealt with in the legislature is the state AIMS exam,” Arizona Sen. Rich Crandall told News/Talk 92.3 KTAR’s Bruce St. James.

Crandall, who is the education committee chair in the state senate said that where Arizona is struggling is when parents don’t exercise the choices they have when it comes to their child’s education.

“No state has the choice we do, but if a parent chooses not to exercise choice then it doesn’t make any difference.”

Crandall also said that Arizona’s standards for testing isn’t working right now.

“We only compare ourselves to ourselves in Arizona which is the worst thing you can do in education,” he said.

In two years new standards in Arizona and in 43 other states will take effect replacing the AIMS test with a much more difficult test.

Crandall said these new rigorous standards will be the best thing to happen in the state.
