    We have been here before
I am old enough to remember the first oil shortage. Nothing has changed in the 40 years since. I have seen prices go down twice. Clinton in 2000 and then right after the crash 3 years ago. What on God's green earth makes you think that the oil companies will drop prices and cut profits just because an oil pipeline is made. You know I changed to CFL bulbs to cut costs. Energy company then raises rate. I pay more now than before. Oil companies are the same way.

Comes down to one simple thing
if they can get away with charging a high amount then they will. You can drill, run the pipe line, and use our own oil sands. That will create jobs. Problem we have is that when they go to sell that oil they will give it to the highest bidder. If they want to keep it in the US they will either pay the most or mandate a required amount stay inside the US. Oil has become a currency instead of a commodity and until they come up with a way to power your SUV, trucks, or commercial vehicles then they can charge what they want and people are forced to pay that price.

Because the availability of crude isn't the problem. At all. The problems is refinement and logistical transport. Not to mention the fact that if every single US owned oil rich land was pumped dry, it wouldn't meet demands for even 3 months.

Which part is untrue? I've spent some time looking at this problem - the only speculative aspect of what I wrote is how long US oil would last us at current and future consumption rates - but whatever the number, it's agreed that it's a drop in the bucket and would have very limited impact.

have not look at all the oil in Alaska. Do some real research please instead of reading lefty websites and blogs.

It's science pal. Heard of it? Science isn't left/right. And yes, I've looked at the estimates of what's in Alaska. There is a decent amount of research available. Doesn't change the fact that even if we dismantled the state and turned it into one big oil pump, it doesn't solve our problem.

Even with the most generous of estimates, Alaskan oil would barely make up for lost production due to declining fields, nor would it make up for simple increasing demands (estimated to be about 1.5 million barrels a day increase by 2013) It doesn't matter what political persuasion you are - it's facts, not politics.

don't confuse reserves with untapped. we have more untapped crude in American soil than all the opec coutries put together! and thats a fact!

    think about what you wrote
oil is sold on the global market, so when the market crashed the price per barrell went down and when the market went back up and so did crud, why? supply and demand. want the price to go down? increase the supply, flood the market and we will be paying under a buck againg. "DRILL BABY DRILL" and there is plenty of it

According to the Dept of Energy and the US Geological survey, a generous estimate of total volume of recoverable oil from all known untapped fields in Alaska is just over 10 billion barrels (there is approx 95% certainty that it's closer to 5 billion) The US consumes 21 million barrels a day, 6 million of that produced domestically. Do the math.

At our rate of consumption projected through 2024, these amounts of untapped domestic resources will only make a minor dent in our dependency on foreign oil. Domestic drilling is not the answer. American new energy research, leadership and eventual autonomy is the answer. Screw the middle east. The death of oil is inevitable.

we have enough American resources for over 300 hundred years and until researcher comes up with somthing better lets use it. and dont forget all the by-produts of crude oil, drilling our own is a win win for eveyone!

Total horsecrap. The United States last month made more oil than it needed, and ended up exporting some - a trend that's been occurring for months now. In fact, our overproduction of oil has helped balance out declining production rates in Mexico, Russia and other countries. "Drill baby drill" is a campaign slogan shouted by an airhead to adoring fans and nothing more.

Nope - sorry. Not clueless. It's an aspect of my business to know this stuff. Anybody who types that we have the domestic resources to meet current and future oil demands for "over 300 years" has ZERO grasp of global considerations, global demand, what "spare production capacity" means and how it affects prices, how speculation affects the market, how different refineries operate and what they produce, OPEC and not OPEC producers... you are lost dude.

It all sounds well and good dril baby drill. I can tell you have been listening to the talking heads from my side of the ailse and that may be the lamest quote ever. We sound like idiots by repeating it. I merely stated a fact. Gas has gone done twice in my lifetime. Oil companies will not let it go down they will control the spigot. We already produce enough to export. Global market, no global market they will not produce enough to cause price to go down. It is about profit.
