Opposition mounts against federal pen

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Pima County Board of Supervisors and others are voicing their opposition to federal plans to build a detention center on the Tohono O'odham Nation's San Xavier District.

Pima County Supervisors RamDon Valadez and Sharon Bronson joined County Administrator Chuck Huckelberry in raising numerous concerns about the project, including impacts on regional flooding, archaeological resources near the Santa Cruz River, traffic and conservation efforts.

The tribe says the 750-bed, 140,000-square-foot prison on 48 acres would create around 300 jobs.

Former Tohono O'odham Tribal Council member David Garcia said it should raise questions about what sort of liability the tribe and the San Xavier District would face if prisoners were to file lawsuits over their treatment at the planned facility. He said hearings on the proposal are needed.

Why not put the Federal Prison near the Washington DC Capitol of the United States of Mexico. Granted it will be a little further for the relatives to come and visit. Obama may want to initiate a stimulas package for this as well as those who want to visit. The Indian Nation is in it for the bucks no doubt. They should have the Federal Prisons and the Casinos to make all the money they want. The USA owes it to them right? Where is the sympathy for the bleeding heart Pima County Supervisors who have they money grubbing hands in everything else, why not more federal prisons. The USA has more people incarcerated than most any other country in the world. What does all this say about the Americans and the United States of America or should I start saying the United States of Mexico as the Mexicans do or the Indian Nations of the United States of Mexico.

I don't buy the Board of Supervisors concerns for a minute, they have other reasons. The Tribe hopefully will allow the build since they have the ultimate say and put some people to work. They could use a federal prison down there to house criminals closer to the border.
  • Looking at this wrong...

Build the prison facility...build several of them! Keep them locked up and off the streets forever. Create industries which they can do a 9-5 job, and pay restituion for the crimes they have committed against our communities, they can pay for their food, and stay at the prison. This is the very best solution..for the community.. You aint fixing them..they are frigin scum, and everyone should stop trying to make them "all better".
