SURPRISE, Ariz. -- A Surprise teenager is in critical condition with burns suffered in a grilling accident.
Oscar Fuentes, 14, was grilling outside his home in the northwest Valley, near U.S. 60 and Deer Valley Road, Monday afternoon when he sprayed gasoline on the flames, which exploded and set him on fire, authorities said.
They said the father was in the front yard and, when he heard his son screaming, ran to the back yard and found the boy rolling on the ground.
The boy suffered third-degree burns over 80 percent of his body and was airlifted to Maricopa Medical Center.
According to AZFamily 3 in Phoenix, doctors said Fuentes is heavily sedated right now.
Dr. Kevin Foster said the next few days will be spent trying to keep the teen alive, saying Oscar is in extremely critical condition.
"It's 50-50 right now," Foster said. "This was a devastating burn and he's in critical condition right now and not anywhere near being out of the woods yet."
Medics reportedly had to sedate the boy and insert a tube down his throat before taking him to the hospital.
ABC-15 got video of the emergency flight to the hospital.
