Armored truck employee shot at Arizona store

by Associated Press (September 5th, 2010 @ 12:32pm)

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Police are searching for a man who shot an armored truck employee during a robbery near the entrance of a Walmart in Glendale on Sunday.

Police Sgt. Brent Coombs says the armored truck employee was dropping off and picking up items at the store when he was attacked by a man who was described by witnesses as an adult black male.

The man shot the armored truck employee in the leg and the hand and then fled the scene in a small red sport utility vehicle. Authorities believe he took a black bag from employee but they are not sure what was inside.

The employee was taken to a local hospital and is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers cleared the store and are now interviewing witnesses.

It was stolen and found abandoned last night. This has the marking of an inside job or at least, someone who has been casing the timing of this armored truck for awhile. If the security cameras were doing their job, it might be easy to ID this guy.

I was there when this happened. It was black man who shot the guard, that is not a race card, it is truth. The man shot was white and no one would help except myself and another medical assistant, Maria. This was a crime of financial gain, not racially motivated.

I just want to say that I worked at the 35th and Bethany home store when our armored guy was held up at gun point. It may even been the same guy, escalating. Instead of laying blame, you ALL should tell people to be more aware of their surroundings. EVERYONE gets complacent, cops, guards, employees, etc... and what becomes a routine thing gets all out of whack when someone doesn't take the time to notice someone who had been standing around the front end for over an hour. PAY ATTENTION, DON'T judge others.

There is NOTHING in this short article that can can be called *playing the race card.* The shooter was identified by witnesses as a black man. This is not racist; this is not sexist. It is a description!

To play a race card, I suspect that this was a case of the Guard letting his guard down! The last time we had any armored car guards killed in this state was years ago! it was Russ Dempsey and Cecil Newkirk the two Purolator guards that were killed and robbed. They failed to follow protocal and opened the door to who they thought were highway patrol. Apathy and being rushed to get to the next pickup may have caught both the guard and driver off guard! It is sad, but it;s a hard job and can be more dangerous that being a cop! Your are protecting something that everyone wants.
