Gas tanker, vehicles collide on Phoenix freeway

PHOENIX — Two babies were killed after a three-vehicle collision involving a gas tanker occurred on Interstate 10 in west Phoenix on Saturday.

Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves says a car slowed around 2:40 p.m. to look at a minor collision and cut off a minivan, which then slammed on its brakes to avoid a crash.

That's when a small sedan hit the minivan. A gas tanker then hit the two vehicles and overturned on its side.

A 13-month-old girl, a 3-week-old boy, and a woman believed to be their mother were critically injured in the sedan and taken to hospitals; the babies died around 3:45. A 35-year-old woman in the minivan had nonfatal injuries, and the tanker driver was not hurt.

The entire roadway is blocked and all traffic is being taken off the eastbound lanes of the freeway at the 51st Avenue exit.

DPS is looking for the male driver of the white or gray Dodge Magnum that cut off the minivan.

    Goes out to the two babies who died and their mother for her terrible loss. This is yet another example of "rubberneckers" and the fact that they do indeed cause accidents. I will never, for the life of me, figure out why people drive past minor accidents, etc., like it's the first time in their lives they have seen such a thing, and then jam on the brakes to get a better look at NOTHING. Totally ridiculous.

    claim they have a right to gawk at accidents. So they slow down to a crawl and gawk at the scene with no consideration for any others. Hope they got a good look. Two dead kids, parents lives ruined, and thousands of drivers delayed.

    Because some jerk in a Magnum cut other people off on a major interstate, now two innocent children are dead. You people in your cars are pathetic and self serving at times

    it was just the Magnum to blame. Sounds like the car and truck weren't paying attention either. That one car was crushed and the tanker almost on it's side. Going too fast at an accident site and not hitting the brakes in time because they were probably looking at the other wreck too.
