Power Pontiac Buick GMC has closed shop on the Scottsdale Motor Mile, due to downsizing. It's one of several dealerships to recently leave the area.

Others dealerships either went bankrupt or moved to Mesa or closer to a freeway, where business is likely to be better.

"We have [had] both some short-term discussions about what should happen, and there's actually a planning process that's been going on for some time for the southern area of the city," said Harold Stewart of Scottsdale's Economic Vitality Department.

"Part of that plan will reflect ideas for Scottsdale Road as well as McDowell."

The dealership closings could be a loss of up to $5 million per year in sales tax revenues for the city.

"The range could be from a half-million dollars from a dealership to maybe up to a million, depending on the size of the dealership," Stewart said.

The remaining dealerships have pledged to stay, while negotiations are under way to lure other car dealerships to the area.
