An east Phoenix homeowner is recovering from gunshot wounds after being shot mistakenly by police as he stepped out of a room where he had been holding a burglar at gunpoint.
As many as six shots were fired at the homeowner and he was hit numerous times, police said. They said his wounds were not life-threatening.
The man's name was not released.
Officer Brian Lilly, who fired the shots, was placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.
The 35-year-old homeowner came out of a room into a hallway carrying a gun as police ordered everyone out of the house, at 3126 E. Flower, Wednesday night, Sgt. Tommy Thompson said.
He said Lilly ``fired multiple times. He struck that subject, that subject went down. At that point, he learned that that was in fact the homeowner at that residence."
The police shooting ended a wild night in which a man had gone door-to-door in an area near 32nd Street and Thomas, claiming he had been shot.
The man, identified as Angel Anastacio Canalis, 27, had been at two other homes before he broke the front window and climbed into the house of the homeowner who was shot.
Canalis was arrested and hospitalized for treatment of wounds to his leg and ankle. Police said he faces charges of armed burglary, two counts of aggravated assault and misconduct involving weapons.
The incident began about 8 p.m. Wednesday when police received a call of ``shots fired" in the area of 2900 E. Mulberry. A short time later, they received a call of a burglary at a home, at 3121 E. Mulberry. Police said the suspect had gone to that house and told the residents he had been shot, but the residents fled and called police when the suspect and a woman with him began acting strangely.
Meanwhile, the suspect himself called police before going to the house on Flower, where he was confronted by the armed homeowner.
A woman and two children fled the house as police arrived.
No officers were hurt.
