A K-9 was shot and killed by one of his handlers Friday morning while investigating a possible break-in at a north Scottsdale home.

Sgt. Chris Coffee was with his four-legged partner 'Striker' when his gun discharged, according to authorities.

"Unfortunately, the bullet hit Striker and Striker was later pronounced deceased at a local veterinary clinic," Sgt. Mark Clark said.

Coffee is having a difficult time with the loss of his partner, a 6-year-old Czech Shepherd, according to Clark.

"Sgt. Coffee is devastated," Clark said. "It's absolutely the worst-case scenario for a K-9 handler. This was his partner, his friend for the last 2 ½ years."

Coffee, a 10-year employee with Scottsdale Police, has an exemplary service record with the department.

An investigation is underway.
