Officials may close schools to save $$

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Flagstaff Unified School District administrators are scheduled to meet Tuesday with the governing board to discuss possibly closing and merging elementary school campuses next year.

Consolidating elementary schools is one of the district's strategies to save money in the face of a projected $9 million budget shortfall next year.

Consolidating would also address concerns outlined by the state Auditor General's Office that included uneven enrollment patterns and underutilized buildings highlighted in a 2008 audit.

The district has 12 elementary schools, including a K-8 school in Leupp, about 45 miles northeast of Flagstaff on the Navajo Nation.

The school board is expected to act on a closure plan on Dec. 8, and finalize it on Feb. 8.

a lot of their income is based on how many are enrolled. I don't know what the offset is, do you?
