TUCSON, Ariz. - A Mexican man has been sentenced to nearly three years in prison for his part in an attempt to smuggle more than $1 million in cash across the Arizona border.
Federal prosecutors say 29-year-old Francisco Vera-Moroyoqui received a 31-month sentence Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Tucson.
Authorities say Vera-Moroyoqui and his father - 54-year-old Efren Vera-Romero - were arrested in March after they attempted to drive an SUV into Mexico through the DeConcini Port of Entry in Nogales, Ariz.
They told authorities they had a combined $5,881 in cash on them, but inspection of the vehicle found an additional $1,444,972 hidden in a false compartment in the ceiling of the vehicle.
Both men pleaded guilty to attempted bulk cash smuggling. Vera-Romero was sentenced in October to 37 months in federal prison.
