Wildfire spreads in White Mountains

Several roads south of Alpine were closed Friday as an out-of-season wildfire spread in the White Mountains.

The "Reno Fire" had burned about 3,000 acres and spread into the Gobbler Point and Snake Creek areas.

The Forest Service said the fire had moved west onto the San Carlos Apache Reservation and was nearing Black River. San Carlos officials hoped to let it burn through ground fuels remaining after a timber sale.

A lack of rain during the summer monsoon and unseasonally warm temperatures have pushed the fire season far into the fall.

Hunters were urged to be especially careful with campfires because of the dry conditions.
