New carpool lanes in Chandler, Tempe

PHOENIX - The work commute in the tight, congested Valley traffic may have just gotten a little easier for drivers in the Chandler and Tempe area.
Thirty miles of carpool lanes are now completed and installed on the Loop-101 Freeway from Loop-202 to State Route 51, but some drivers are still grumbling because there are no carpool ramps connecting them to nearby freeways.
"We've had some of those situations where we can connect carpool lanes from one freeway to the other, State Route 51 to the 101 as an example," said Doug Nintzel with the Arizona Department of Transportation. "But for the most part, we are really going to need drivers who are using carpool lanes to know that, yeah, they need to use the regular ramp to make that move."
There are no ramps right now, so drivers need to use extreme caution moving from the carpool lane on the Loop 101, to busy roads like the US-60 and Red Mountain Freeway.
The ramps are part of the Maricopa Association of Governments 20-year plan and it's not known when they will be built.
