Man rescued after Grand Canyon fall

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. - National Park Service officials have rescued a Colorado man who fell on his head during a hike in the Grand Canyon.

NPS spokeswoman Maureen Oltrogge says the 60-year-old Boulder man was climbing in a drainage off a popular trail about two miles below the South Rim on Sunday morning when he fell a short distance and landed on his head.

One of his hiking companions called 911 and told dispatchers that the man appeared to be disoriented.

A park helicopter lowered a rescuer on a fixed line; the rescuer was attached to the man and the two were flown to a landing spot.

Another helicopter took the man to Flagstaff Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Oltrogge declined to say what the man's condition was.
