Gas leak forces evacuation of Desert Ridge

PHOENIX - A ruptured gas line at Desert Ridge forced several stores to evacuate after gas was smelled inside stores.

Hazmat crews rushed to the scene after the evacuation Monday night.

"People are spilling out of those big stores into the parking lot at this point, not getting to buy the things they went to buy," said Phoenix Fire Department Captain Shelly Jamison. "We know our economy can use it right now, so hopefully we'll get it fixed pretty quickly."

Target was among the stores forced to evacuate its customers. There was no word on what caused the gas leak.
