PHOENIX (AP) - A traffic stop in western Arizona has led to the seizure of nearly $60,000 worth of an especially potent type of marijuana.

The Department of Public Safety says its officers pulled over a vehicle near Tonopah Saturday afternoon for improper display of a license plate.

Officers said the occupants were acting unusual and officers also smelled a strong marijuana odor.

A drug sniffing dog was brought in and it led officers to a duffel bag containing 14 pounds of hydroponically grown marijuana.

DPS says hydroponic pot is considerably more potent.

The suspects are 49-year-old John Conniff, a respiratory therapist and his wife, 47-year-old Michelle Conniff, a sixth grade teacher, both of Phoenix.

They were arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana for sale, transportation of marijuana for sale and conspiracy to distribute and sell marijuana.

Until the late '30's the hemp plant was one of this countries' leading cash crops. George Washington and many of the founding fathers were hemp farmers. Everything that was made of cloth and needed to be stong and durable was made from hemp (jeans, workshirts, ropes, sails, etc). According to a study done in the 90's, 68% of the prison population in the U.S. were doing time for non-violent drug offenses. That's a topic for another day (Prison is BIG business). Another study done after the 1983 recession concluded that if marijuana were taxed and sold according to laws that govern alcohol and tobacco the national deficit would be eliminated within 4 years. When prohibition started the plant itself was not illegal but possesing it was because there were taxes due and there was no collection of them. The marijuana tax stamp was required but none were ever issued. There are so many things that would be effected by legalization and most of them would eliminate or reduce other forms of income. Just about anything you can think of, just follow the money. The petroleum industry to start with...hemp can be turned into fuel that you could burn in your car or furnace that you can make in your backyard for almost nothing...that fuel burns at about 104 octane (that's racing fuel) and produces almost no emissions. Look it up, hemp for fuel. Anything where petrochemicals are used to manufacture can be replaced by hemp at a lower cost and without the pollution of the by-products. The textile industry, Levi's originally were made of hemp. That's just the tip of the proverbial ice berg.
  • Trying to legalize pot

is unfortunately, going to be as difficult as pushing wet spaghetti uphill for a number of reasons. Unlike tobacco, it's relatively easy to grow meaning that the govenment can't accurately control it to tax it. Then you have the tobacco lobbyists(an honorable group, to be sure)who own members of congress and don't want the competition. Last and not least, we have to overcome some archaic ideologies that influence many of our congressmen in their opinions and decisions.
  • Exactly....we can't AFFORD to be locking up taxpayers for pot....

These are both taxpayers, and we want to take them and put them in jail or prison for this?!?! Our prison population is getting COMPLETELY out of control. We cannot afford to continue on in this manner. Our tax revenues will decrease, and we as taxpayers will be paying for these people to be in prison. In my opinion, when our states have to increase our taxes to pay for their Corrections, we will be a socialist society afterall....except supporting an ever-growing portion of our society because they prefer a different recreational drug. This is not fiscally sound.
  • This is Crap

I can not believe that our goverment resources is being put into this crap. As the artical stated both were professionals. Now lets put two an two togeter. Professional who work a 9 to 5 job , pay thier bills and thier taxes. There is no difference between them and an adult who drinks a beer. However, because we have people in our goverment that feel that they know whats best for us, these hard working people will have to go through hell for something that has no more harmfull effects that drinking a beer has. Second, "Acting Funny" what they had a smile of thier face? Even this report leads you to think that Pot makes you crazy... or unable to handle yourself properly. That is CRAP as well. I hope in this day and age that the old man policy of our goverment would change to respect a person's right to decied for themselfs... I personly think drinking is worse then smokeing pot. and anyone who says differently eather does'nt know what they are talking about, has there head up thier own rear, or in the pocket of the drug/beer companies.
